Layers are the instruments of keeping you dry, warm and using your energy efficiently. Put into the right systems, a good sequence of layers provides you with weather protection, moves moisture away from your skin, conserves or dissipates heat, and does this in the least amount of time.
Use the layering guide to select your system and to understand how it works together. Function and comfort increase from effective layering.
The way that layers sit next to each other optimizes temperature regulation and moisture management inside your clothing, by allowing the fabric technologies to function at maximum performance. Proper layering also permits textiles to move freely over each other, so you don't experience restriction or chafing. Having an efficient system adds up to more time outdoors, safely and comfortably pursuing and pushing your activities of choice.
Your first layer, worn next-to-skin. In many ways, this layer determines your other layers.Lighter weights are best for warm conditions and/or high output levels. Heavier weights for cool conditions or lower output.Wool retains its warmth when wet and has natural anti-odor properties. Synthetics are lightweight, dry quickly and can be more abrasion resistant.
Air permeable layers that provide some warmth and protection, in addition to moisture management.
Down fill mid layers have the greatest warmth-to-weight ratio. They are highly efficient, packable and light. Best suited to cool and dry conditions.
Synthetic fill has the advantage of staying warm when damp, and durability in varied environments. These mid layers are less compact than down, more versatile.
Hardfleece has a fleece interior bonded to a weather resistant outer fabric. These mid layers are highly air permeable, removing moisture but retaining warmth. Good for high output, cold conditions and moderate precipitation.
Fleece is a thermal garment with air permeability, that can be worn as a standalone layer. Fleece offers high comfort, less weather resistance.
Consider your base layer and your typical body temperature when selecting your mid layer. If you are often cold, choose a mid layer with less air permeability. If your base layer is warm, but you want weather protection, a lighter mid layer may work best.
When selecting insulation type, consider weight and weather conditions. Down provides the highest warmth-to-weight value and packs small, but it is best suited to cool and dry conditions. Synthetic materials remain warm when damp, are more abrasion resistant but less compact and heavier than down.
Each type of insulation is available in a range of warmths, from superlight to severe cold.
Shells are the most weather protective layer, most often worn on the outside of all other layers. Evaluate your environment, expected output level and typical conditions when making your selection.
GORE-TEX® shells are fully waterproof, windproof and breathable. Available in a range of fabric technologies, applicable to specific use and environments.
Windshells are lighter weight, wind and weather resistant. Best suited to dry conditions, or minimal precipitation.
Softshell refers to a four-way stretch textile with an inherently durable smooth outer surface. Weather resistant and highly abrasion resistant, our range of softshells deliver varied degrees of warmth and protection.
Composite garments are composed of more than one fabric technology. This is done to achieve optimal performance in targeted areas. For example, GORE-TEX® sleeves and shoulders for waterpoof protection, combined with a softshell torso to improve temperature regulation.
Designed to be worn over all other layers, belay jackets are an extra layer that is packable, lightweight and meant for use during periods of rest or low activity.
Down filled belay jackets manage extreme conditions and periods of inactivity in cold temperatures. They are spacious and fully protective, worn over other layers.
NA sizing which can be seen on products like Arc'teryx beanies means that they are one size fits all.
Arc'teryx designs helmet-compatible hoods for their jackets with specific features to accommodate helmets effectively:
Adjustability: The hoods are typically highly adjustable with multiple drawcords or toggles. This allows the user to cinch the hood tightly around the helmet to prevent it from slipping or limiting visibility.
Size and Coverage: Helmet-compatible hoods are larger and deeper than standard hoods. They are designed to fit over climbing, skiing, or mountaineering helmets without restricting movement or visibility. The extra space ensures that the hood can cover the entire helmet and still provide adequate protection and comfort.
Brims and Wire Stiffeners: Many Arc'teryx hoods have built-in brims or wire stiffeners along the edges. These features help the hood maintain its shape and keep rain or snow away from the face even when worn over a helmet. The stiffeners also prevent the hood from flopping over the eyes or obstructing peripheral vision.
Compatibility with Jackets: Arc'teryx designs their jackets and hoods to work together seamlessly. The hoods are strategically placed and shaped to fit the contours of the jackets, ensuring that they provide maximum coverage and protection when worn together.
Material and Construction: The materials used in Arc'teryx hoods are chosen for their durability, weather resistance, and ability to stretch or adjust comfortably over helmets. This ensures that the hood remains functional and comfortable in various weather conditions and activities.
Overall, Arc'teryx helmet-compatible hoods are designed with attention to detail and functionality, aiming to provide outdoor enthusiasts with reliable protection and comfort when wearing helmets in challenging environments.
Synthetic and down insulations are two common types of materials used in outdoor gear and clothing for warmth. Here are the key differences between them:
Material Composition:
- Down Insulation: Down insulation is made from the fine clusters of fibers found under the feathers of ducks and geese. These clusters are highly effective at trapping air and creating warmth due to their three-dimensional structure.
- Synthetic Insulation: Synthetic insulation is typically made from polyester fibers that are designed to mimic the insulating properties of down. These fibers are often arranged in a way that traps air similarly to down, but they are man-made rather than natural.
Warmth and Insulation:
- Down Insulation: Down is renowned for its excellent warmth-to-weight ratio. It provides very efficient insulation and is highly compressible, making it easy to pack.
- Synthetic Insulation: Synthetic insulation generally performs better than down when wet. It retains its insulating properties when damp or wet, whereas down tends to lose its loft and warmth when it gets wet.
Water Resistance:
- Down Insulation: Down does not perform well in wet conditions. When wet, it clumps together and loses its ability to trap air effectively, thus losing its insulating properties.
- Synthetic Insulation: Synthetic insulation dries quickly and retains its loft and insulating properties even when damp or wet. This makes synthetic insulation a more reliable choice in wet or humid environments.
Durability and Maintenance:
- Down Insulation: Down products can last a long time with proper care, but they require more delicate handling and care compared to synthetic materials.
- Synthetic Insulation: Synthetic insulation is generally more durable and easier to care for. It can withstand more frequent washing and drying without losing its loft or insulation properties.
Cost and Availability:
- Down Insulation: Down products are often more expensive than synthetic alternatives due to the cost of sourcing and processing natural down.
- Synthetic Insulation: Synthetic insulation tends to be more affordable than down, making it a popular choice for budget-conscious consumers.
Choosing Between Them:
- Down is excellent for cold, dry conditions where lightweight warmth is crucial, and you can avoid exposure to moisture.
- Synthetic is preferred in wet or humid environments, for those who want easy maintenance, or for budget-conscious consumers.
In summary, the choice between synthetic and down insulation depends largely on your specific needs, environment, and preferences regarding warmth, weight, water resistance, and durability.
Gore-Tex is a waterproof and breathable fabric membrane widely used in outdoor clothing, footwear, and accessories. It was invented in 1969 by Bob Gore, a chemist working for W. L. Gore & Associates. Gore-Tex is composed of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE), which is a form of Teflon.
The key properties of Gore-Tex include:
Waterproof: Gore-Tex fabric is designed to be completely waterproof, preventing water from penetrating through the material.
Breathable: Despite being waterproof, Gore-Tex allows water vapor (perspiration) to escape to the outside of the fabric, helping to keep the wearer dry and comfortable.
Durable: Gore-Tex is known for its durability and resistance to abrasion, making it suitable for rugged outdoor activities.
Windproof: In addition to being waterproof and breathable, Gore-Tex materials also provide windproof protection, shielding the wearer from cold winds.
Lightweight: Gore-Tex fabrics are lightweight and packable, which is advantageous for outdoor gear that needs to be carried or worn for extended periods.
Versatile: Gore-Tex is used in a wide range of products including jackets, pants, gloves, and footwear for activities like hiking, skiing, mountaineering, and biking.
Overall, Gore-Tex has become synonymous with high-performance outdoor gear due to its ability to provide protection from the elements while maintaining comfort and durability.
Product Care
Routine care and maintenance is critical for the optimum performance of your Arc'teryx GORE-TEX garment.
Dirt buildup and body oils from sweat can compromise the membrane and overall effectiveness of the textile’s Durable Water Repellent (DWR) treatment. DWR encourages water to roll off the surface –this is called ‘beading’. Regularly washing and re-applying DWR will restore the performance and extend the lifespan of your GORE-TEX garment.
It depends on how often and how hard you use your gear. As a rule of thumb:
• Heavy use (e.g. running, ski-touring) – wash every 10 to 12 days of use
• Light use (e.g. dog walking, urban use) – wash every 20 to 30 days of use
Use your best judgment. If your garment looks dirty or is no longer beading water, it’s time to give it a wash.
STEP ONE | PREPARE FOR WASHING
• Close the main and pit zippers.
• Open pocket zippers.
• Release tension on all elastic drawcords.
• Loosen and secure the cuff Velcro®.
STEP TWO | WASH
• Put your garment in the machine and add cleaning agent.
• Wash on medium heat (40°C/104°F) at regular cycle setting.
It is advised to use a second rinse cycle to remove any residual soap which will compromise DWR and garment performance.
STEP THREE | RE-APPLY DWR (IF NECESSARY)
If your garment is no longer beading water, it is time to re-apply DWR.
A spray-on DWR treatment will offer superior performance and the ability to target high-wear areas. We recommend:
• Arc’teryx Nu Care Products
• ReviveX® Durable Water Repellent
• Fibertec Blue Guard Spray-On
Remove your garment from the machine and shake off any excess water.
• Close all zippers
• Hang the garment and spray DWR on the face fabric –concentrating on high-wear area
• Turn the garment inside out for maximum uptake by the face fabric before placing in dryer.
STEP FOUR | DRY
• Place your damp garment in the dryer on medium heat for 40 to 50 minutes (or until dry to the touch) to effectively activate DWR.
When possible, use a cleaning agent made specifically for technical fabrics. Outdoor specialty retailers carry various brands. We recommend:
• Arc’teryx Nu Care Products
• ReviveX® Pro Cleaner™
• Nu Down Detergent
• NU TECHNICAL DETERGENT
• Grangers® Performance Wash
• Fibertec Pro Wash
You may also use a liquid free-rinsing soap or gentle detergent. Avoid detergents that contain fabric softeners, fragrance, whiteners or colorants.
We recommend running an extra rinse cycle on your washing machine to ensure any potential residue is fully removed from your garment.
To prepare the garment for washing:
• Close the main zippers and pit zips
• Open pocket zippers
• Release tension on all elastic draw cords.
• Add cleaning agent to the machine and wash the garment on a medium heat setting (40°C / 104°F).
Remove the garment, shake to remove excess water and place it in the dryer. DWR is reactivated best when tumble dried at a medium heat setting (40°C / 104°F) for 40 to 50 minutes.
DWR is a polymer coating that increases surface tension and helps water to bead and roll off. Applying DWR to your garment’s face fabric increases its hydrophobic properties and of repelling water.
If your garment is no longer beading water even after it has been washed and dried, it’s time to re-apply the DWR. A spray-on treatment offers the ability to target high-wear areas on your garment, encouraging its optimal performance.
• Arc’teryx Nu Care Products
• ReviveX® Durable Water Repellent
• Fibertec Blue Guard Spray-On
Once washed, remove your garment from the machine and shake off excess water. Close all zippers. Hang the damp garment and spray DWR evenly on the wet face fabric of the garment, concentrating on high-wear areas.
Next, place the garment in a tumble drier on a medium heat setting (40°C / 104°F) for 40 to 50 minutes. We do not recommend using a wash-in DWR. Before drying, turn the garment inside out for maximum uptake by the face fabric.
Down relies on air between its clusters to retain warmth. When the face fabric of your garment becomes dirty, body oils and dirt attract water which can then transfer into the down, causing it to clump. Without the pockets of air between the down clusters, the garment loses its insulation properties.
Down is best washed only as necessary. To maintain performance, wash your garment when it shows signs of dirt or sweat, or the down is starting to lose loft or clump.
When possible, it is best to use a cleaning agent made specifically for technical down products. We recommend:
• Arc’teryx Nu Care Products
• ReviveX® Down Cleaner
• Grangers® Down Wash
• Fibertec Down Wash
• Nikwax Down Wash Direct
STEP ONE | PREPARE FOR WASHING
Close the main and pit zippers. Open pocket zippers. Release tension on all elastic drawcords. Loosen and secure the cuff Velcro®.
Front load washing machines are recommended; however, if you have a washing machine with an agitator (top loader), putting your garment inside a mesh bag will help protect it.
STEP TWO | WASH
Put your garment in the machine, add cleaning agent and wash on medium heat (40°C/104°F) at permanent press or gentle cycle settings.
Double rinsing is recommended.
STEP THREE | RE-APPLY DWR (IF NECESSARY)
If the face fabric of your garment no longer beads water, even after it has been washed and dried, it is time to re-apply DWR.
Remove your garment from the machine and shake off excess water. Close all zippers. Hang it and spray DWR on the face fabric, concentrating on high-wear areas.
STEP FOUR | DRY
Turn your garment inside out, lay it on a flat surface and remove excess moisture by gently pressing on it with a clean towel.
Place your garment in the dryer on low heat (permanent press cycle) with two “dryer balls” or clean tennis balls to prevent the down from clumping and to help it regain its loft. It will be necessary to periodically turn your garment inside out throughout the cycle to help it dry properly.
Down must be completely dried before storing to avoid clumping or mold. Be prepared for the process to take upwards of three hours.
Arc'teryx gloves are constructed using a variety of materials and fabrics, and patterned uniquely to provide the perfect combination of dexterity and warmth.
Arc'teryx premium quality Lezanova leather "dries softly" maintaining suppleness as it dries. We strongly suggest that you keep gloves and mitts at a safe distance (at least one metre) from direct heat sources such as wood stoves, or baseboard heaters.
For washing, we recommend that you hand wash your gloves or mitts with a mild detergent in warm water, and then hang to dry. Do not use a washing machine, tumble dryer or any type of wash-in treatments.
Removable liners should also be hand-washed and dried separately. Both the outer shells and the glove liners should NOT be turned inside out.
DWR is a polymer substance applied to the face-fabric of an Arc'teryx Softshell garment. When your Softshell garment is no longer shedding surface moisture as it used to—even after it's been washed and dried—it's time to reapply the DWR. We recommend:
• Arc’teryx Nu Care Products
• ReviveX® Durable Water Repellent
• Fibertec Blue Guard Spray-On
After washing close all zippers, hang the wet garment on a hanger and spray Fibertec Blue Guard Spray-On or ReviveX® Spray-On Water Repellent evenly onto the wet face fabric of the garment. Next, place the garment in a tumble drier on a medium heat setting (40°C / 104°F) for 40 to 50 minutes. We do NOT recommend using a wash-in DWR as this process does not guarantee an even distribution of the DWR solution across the entire garment. Instead we suggest using a spray-on solution as this can easily be applied directly and evenly to the entire garment.
We recommend:
• Arc’teryx Nu Care Products
• ReviveX® Durable Water Repellent
• Fibertec Blue Guard Spray-On
First, wash your garment using Grangers® Performance Wash, Fibertec Pro Wash or ReviveX® Synthetic Fabric Cleaner. Then, use your chosen reproofing product spray directly on to the outer face-fabric of the garment while it is still wet. We do NOT recommend using a wash-in DWR as this process does not guarantee an even distribution of the DWR solution across the entire garment. Instead we suggest using a spray-on solution as this can easily be applied directly and evenly to the entire garment.
Tumble dry your garment inside out on a warm/medium (60°C / 140°F) temperature setting for approximately 30-40 minutes or until dry.
Machine wash in lukewarm water and tumble dry at a low temperature. Do not bleach; avoid use of fabric softeners, do not iron or dry clean. For best results, launder garment with like-colours. For the optimal performance, throw your fleece garment in the washing machine when you wash your GORE-TEX jacket using Grangers® Performance Wash, Fibertec Pro Wash or ReviveX® Synthetic Fabric Cleaner. It removes all of the dirt, prevents odour from building up in the fabric and leaves no residue.
We strongly recommend dry cleaning your woolen products, however in most cases, you may hand-wash your woolen garments in cold water using a special soap such as Zero/Woolite, then lay flat to dry.
The best way to wash your footwear is simply with water. You can either rub the dirt off with your hands or else you can scrub the footwear with a soft brush. You should be able to get most of the dirt off this way. If you feel that you need to use soap, use a mild or pure soap and rinse the footwear thoroughly to remove any residue. Leave the footwear to dry (don't use a dryer or any other source of heat). If you leave the footwear outside, leave them in the shade. They should dry overnight, but it might take longer depending on the climate.
Footwear liners should be hand-washed only, using a pure, mild soap, or a normal detergent. Do not use bleach, or fabric softeners. Footwear liners should be hung to dry and NOT put in the tumble dryer.
The best way to wash your pack is simply with water. You can either rub the dirt off with your hands or else you can scrub the pack with a soft brush. You should be able to get most of the dirt off this way. If you feel that you need to use soap, use a mild or pure soap and rinse the pack thoroughly to remove any residue. Hang the pack to dry (don't use a dryer or any other source of heat). If you hang the pack outside, leave it in the shade. It should dry overnight, but it might take longer depending on the climate.
To remove gum or sap from a garment, first freeze the substance with some ice, then use a dull butter knife to scrape off as much as you can. Soak the garment in a water/white vinegar solution, and then either wash it in warm water with mild powder laundry detergent or with a cleaner specifically designed for cleaning synthetic garments, such as Grangers® Performance Wash, Fibertec Pro Wash or ReviveX® Synthetic Fabric Cleaner. For really stubborn stains, brush with a soft bristle brush, like an old toothbrush, using Grangers® Performance Wash, Fibertec Pro Wash or ReviveX® Synthetic Fabric Cleaner diluted with 3 parts water.
To remove grease from a GORE-TEX® garment, you should dampen the stain and then rub the stained area with Grangers® Performance Wash, Fibertec Pro Wash or ReviveX® Synthetic Fabric Cleaner diluted with 3 parts water (dishwashing detergent can also be used with fair results). You can then clean the jacket in warm water, again using the Grangers® Performance Wash, Fibertec Pro Wash or ReviveX® Synthetic Fabric Cleaner (see above: "How do I wash my GORE-TEX® jacket?"). If the stain persists, you can use Grangers® Performance Wash, Fibertec Pro Wash or ReviveX® Synthetic Fabric Cleaner or sponge it with a safe cleaning fluid which can be found at a grocery store. If cleaning fluid is used, the DWR will need to be reapplied.
We recommend washing with cold water on a gentle cycle separate from normal clothing, drying on low heat on a low/delicate setting.
Pills are the result of normal wear and tear—broken clothing fibers on the surface become tangled together. Over time, these threads clump together, forming the characteristic lint ball that is stuck to your clothing. During a wash cycle, they can attract loose micro-threads, speeding up the fabric pilling process.
Clothes pilling can also happen with everyday friction such as parts of your clothing rubbing together, a backpack or purse or even moving around on the couch.
There are some ways you can help slow down or prevent fabric pilling by reducing the friction or abrasion your clothes experience day-to-day. This could include avoiding wearing a backpack with your favorite top, reducing your layers to prevent fabrics from rubbing, or choosing a tightly woven fabric as your second clothing layer. These precautions won’t get rid of pilling altogether, but they can help slow down the process.
A fabric shaver is one the fastest ways to remove pilling from clothes. If the pills are not too stubborn, a lint roller or sticky tape can also be a quick and easy option.
Keeping it clean keeps it out there. Keeping it out there means more adventure, less waste.
